History
CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization with CFUW Clubs, located in every province across Canada.
CFUW Saskatoon History
Established on May 8, 1919 as the University Women’s Club of Saskatoon by 15 women who were university graduates
Membership was open to university graduates of accredited universities.
Objective to provide intellectual stimulation through the study of educational, social, and community issues
Entered into association with the Canadian Federation of University Women and the International Federation of University Women (now Graduate Women International)
At the 1919 Charter Meeting, the club affiliated with the local Council of Women.
Goal was to find the best way to encourage young women to pursue university studies
The Scholarship Committee was formed in 1919. Contributions occurred early on to assist female students at the University of Saskatchewan.
In 1940, the first annual scholarship was established with a value of $100.
The first Book Fair (sale) was established in 1957.
During the ‘60s, issues of interest were education of aboriginal peoples, drug addiction, T.V. credit courses, water pollution, tax inequities, equal pay for equal work, and opposition to discriminative education.
Special study groups focus on Education, Status of Women, and International Relations.
Social activities were established with the Fall Membership Tea, Scholarship Winner Celebration, Christmas Social, January Luncheon Featuring, Resolution Discussion, and Annual General Meeting and Banquet.
The CFUW Scholarship Trust Fund received Charitable Status.
In the 2000’s, the Book Sale has grown exponentially. With the support of a book sale committee, volunteers, and the support of the community, many students have been awarded scholarships.
