“Coming Out of the Shadows: Caregiving After Battle”
Guest Speaker: Erika Dyck
(In-person Event)
War wounds often extend beyond those left on the battlefield. The impact of war trauma has cast a long shadow over military service and the healthcare needs of veterans as they seek out new treatments in the face of mental illnesses that have a long and complicated history when it comes to the Canadian military. Senator Romeo Dallaire broke the silence on mental health in his book, Shake Hands with the Devil (2003), when he exposed some of his own trauma and personal struggles after supervising a peacekeeping mission in Rwanda. The Canadian military was historically slow to introduce mental health services into Veterans’ healthcare provisions, but that is beginning to change, and new therapies are challenging the military model, including questioning the utility of war itself. In this presentation, I look at the history of mental healthcare in the military and explore the reemergence of psychedelic treatments for injuries, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Canadian Vets have joined with American military lobby groups to demand changes to military health and pension provisions to include access to psychedelic therapy in ways that resurrect older debates about the gendered nature of care and suffering.
Erika Dyck is a Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in the History of Health & Social Justice, Department of History at the University of Saskatchewan. She is the author or co-author of several books, including Psychedelic Psychiatry (2008), Managing Madness (2017), The Acid Room (2022), Women & Psychedelics (2024), and Psychedelics: A Visual Odyssey (2024). Erika is the co-editor of two McGill-Queen’s University Press book series on the history of medicine and Intoxicating Histories. She is currently President of the Alcohol and Drugs History Society.

General Meeting
Monday, November 6, 2023
YWCA Guest Speaker
Cara Bahr, B.A., B. Comm, CPA, CMA
Chief Executive Officer for YWCA Saskatoon
In 2022, the YWCA Saskatoon Crisis Shelter & Residence turned away a staggering 2,699 women, 1,385 children, and 169 youth who needed a safe place to stay. We do not know where these women go. The YWCA’s 54 rooms are always full — the longest a room is empty is how long it takes to clean it.
The homelessness crisis in our community further affects women and children. This is the reality for so many in our city — and the number is growing.
The YWCA Saskatoon has embarked on a Capital Campaign to address the needs in the community and to continue to help more women and children on a path to hope, health and healing.
Cara Bahr is passionate about YWCA’s mission to advance the well-being of women, girls, and their families.
